This one-hour self-study focuses on important issues surrounding the prevention of HIV/AIDS and the treatment of persons infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). It fulfills the requirement pursuant to Chapter 455.601 of the Florida legislative code and the Florida Board of Nursing requirement for bi-annual continuing education on this topic. The course encompasses information about the incidence and prevalence of HIV, methods to prevent the spread of HIV, transmission of the virus, and treatment for people infected. Legislation concerning counseling, confidentiality and partner notification is included.

About the Author
Dr. Ruth McCaffrey is currently an Assistant Professor of Nursing at Florida Atlantic University, College of Nursing. She received her Nursing Doctorate from Case Western University and a Master of Science in Nursing from Florida Atlantic University. Dr. McCaffrey maintains an active practice as an advanced family nurse practitioner.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this self-study course, the participant will be able to:
  1. Discuss the incidence and prevalence of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).
  2. Identify the modes of transmission for both HIV and AIDS.
  3. Describe infection control procedures and other procedures used to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS.
  4. Discuss the clinical management of HIV and AIDS.
  5. Define Florida Statues in relation to testing for HIV, confidentiality of the results of testing, counseling, reporting, partner notification, and testing of pregnant women for HIV and AIDS.
  6. Assess own attitudes and behaviors when confronted with HIV and AIDS patients and respond appropriately.
