This two-contact hour home study continuing education program will introduce the concept of emotional intelligence (EI) and the development of nursing leadership skills. Specific strategies the nurse can adapt that utilize aspects of EI when caring for difficult patients and families, as well as dealing with co-workers, physicians, and administrators will be discussed. Additionally, this program will enable the learner to assess their own emotional intelligence and suggest strategies for development of the important attributes that constitute this quality. You will be provided with important building blocks for success in your nursing career, all of which can be applied to other areas of life and work.

About the Author
Lynne M. Dunphy, Ph.D., ARNP

Lynne M. Dunphy holds a Bachelors degree in Nursing from Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY, a Masters degree in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing from Hunter College, New York City, NY, a PhD in Nursing from the University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL, and a post-masters certificate as a Family Nurse Practitioner from Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, FL. Dr. Dunphy is nationally-certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) as a clinical nurse specialist in Adult Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing and as a FNP. She is the author of a number of books, including a large textbook Primary Care: The Art and Science of Advanced Practice Nursing, published by F.A. Davis. Her area of research is nursing history, specifically the development and implementation of the iron lung during the polio epidemics, 1928-1955. She is currently a full professor and Assistant Dean of the Graduate Program of the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, FL.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this home-study continuing education course, the learner will be able to:
  1. Describe various concepts of intelligence and emotions.
  2. Identify the five key components of the concept of emotional intelligence.
  3. Describe two applications of emotional intelligence in the workplace with emphasis on the nurse-patient relationship and nursing leadership.
  4. Conduct an assessment of your own emotional intelligence.
  5. Identify two strategies to develop and enhance your own emotional intelligence in relation to your nursing practice.
