This two contact hour home study continuing education course is focused on child abuse and neglect. Child abuse includes physical, emotional or sexual abuse or neglect of the child by a parent or other individual. This program discusses the vital role nurses play in identifying victims of abuse as well as intervening with families at high risk.

Dr. Raines has clinical experience in the care of children in acute care and home-care settings. Dr. Raines is a member of the Society of Pediatric Nurses and is a distinguished Practitioner in the National Academy of Practice.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this program the participant will be able to:
  1. Discuss child abuse and neglect and related definitions and statistics.
  2. Outline two types of abuse and neglect suffered by children.
  3. Describe two risk factors for abuse of children within the family.
  4. Describe the nursing assessment of the child who has been abused or neglected.
  5. Explain the nurse's legal and ethical role and responsibilities in caring for the abused or neglected child.
  6. Identify three resources or referrals for the child and family.
